About the New Jersey Historical Divers Association

During the summer of 1992, a group of fellow scuba divers met informally to discuss the possibility of investigating many of New Jersey's unidentified shipwrecks. The NJHDA began lecturing and exhibiting shipwreck artifacts throughout the summer of 1994. Since then, many historical societies and clubs have found the our message to be both facinating and educational. Interest in the organization continued to steadily grow from that point on.

On April 24, 1995, the group began to formalize and become incorporated as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) historical organization. The group is governed by a four-person board of trustees who are assisted by "associate" and "project" members.

The Corporation is organized for the following purposes:

1.) To preserve New Jersey's shipwreck and Maritime history.

2.) To research and record the many unknown, lost and misnamed shipwrecks, as well as other potentially historically significant sites.

3.) To document findings and present these findings to the public by means of exhibits, lectures, video presentations and printed publications.

Our nonprofit status has made it possible to receive financial assistance for our expedition, conservation and publishing needs.

Our New Jersey Shipwreck Museum Project

Since shortly after its inception, NJHDA has worked to establish a New Jersey shipwreck history museum. When complete, it will operate as a full-function museum offering display spaces, conference and lecture facilities, a conservation lab, a research facility, and archives. We expect the museum to open in 2008. Until then, we are operating a "model" version which is open to the public 1 to 4 pm most Sundays, and by appointment.

Our museum is located at the InfoAge Science/History Center in Wall, New Jersey. Please stop by for a visit, learn about New Jersey shipwreck history, and see what the future looks like for the NJHDA New Jersey Shipwreck Museum.

Expeditions & Projects

As opportunities present themselves, we will post information about our Expeditions and Projects. This is intended not only to keep visitors up-to-date on our progress, but also to ask for input and recommendations.

Schedule of Events

The NJHDA will be holding fund-raising events to collect money for our museum project. We will also be holding symposiums, seminars, etc. to raise money for our general fund. Read more about these Events and how you can receive an invitation to these events. Your support is sincerely appreciated!

Application for Membership

The NJHDA publishes a journal that keeps our "subscriber members" updated on our progress with the museum project and our shipwreck investigations. Money collected from these supporters partly supports our shipwreck investigations and publishing costs.

Pick up an application for Membership and begin receiving the NJHDA Journal.

Publicly Accessible Archives

We are making an Online Catalog of the NJHDA Archive available to those with access to the internet. It is our hope that the archives will be useful to those interested in researching New Jersey shipwrecks.
